The final season of AMC’s Breaking Bad is looming. I stopped by the home page for the show and noted the 4.9 million “likes.” ‘Sup?
I started watching past episodes two months ago after a neighbor said she was a fan. I’m at the start of season 4—the drama started in 2008– and will probably not make up ground by the August 11 start date for the last eight episodes. Bitch!
Why am I watching a TV series about a cancer patient turned meth king? What is to like about anti-hero Walter White, a character blind to those who hurt, even kill themselves with meth? His mantra is “providing for his family,” I no longer buy into his rationalization. As the meth cook supreme, he’s evil in an evil world. Yo, I haven’t answered the question.
Although most of the scenes are compelling, the storyline is not in my wheelhouse (go look that up, bro!). But the language, particularly the banter from Jesse, Walter’s cooking partner, is riveting on edge and very much alive. In fact, the script writing is run and gun where B doesn’t always follow A.
I’ve been disappointed by the “conclusion” of multiple season TV series, including MASH, Seinfeld, Twin Peaks, etc. and others that I don’t even remember. I didn’t watch Breaking Bad when it first aired, so maybe my criticism is unfair. Perhaps, if I watch every episode, I’ll have a transformation of sorts and sing praises. And I do want to know how Walter and Jesse end up and that is close as I can get to answering why I continue to watch.
