I enjoy rolling hills and the initial curiosity of wondering what’s on the other side. In the above photo Anne, my walking model, is headed up one of the hills of Mugello, Italy. Neither of us knew what we would see at the top. The possibilities were more of the same, a vineyard, a field of wild mustard and wildlife such as boar and rabbits, which if you don’t see, you can eat that evening at local ristorantes. I left one item out—and this is what we saw–a church.
I realize late in life that one of the great therapies is to take long walks, preferably over rolling terrain. I understand why Anne has always wanted to avoid living in flat areas. Regardless, I will be showcasing some of Anne’s famous walks and mine as well in the following months in the Long Walks Page. If you have a favorite walk, please share.
Additional information on this walk: find this area by Googling “Giotto’s House.” Giotto was a 13th Century painter born in the Mugello region, about 30 km north east of Firenze. There are scores of country roads that cut through the hills. Dirt roads and paths may be private. Giotto’s House, now a museum, is a good starting point for walks
