In October of 1979 I held a camera over my head and clicked this shot of Pope John Paul II at St. Peters. About 18 months later he was shot four times in public, but survived. He forgave the gunman.
However, photo ops were severely curtailed, so gone were the days when a tourist like me could whip out a camera and fire away with the Pope a few feet away. He had one heck of a smile.
