I came into the world of Halloween as a pirate and that was pretty much it, year after year. Eye patch, bandana around forehead, horizontal striped shirt, torn pants, sneakers. I loved the concept: free candy for mumbling “trick or treat.”

I stopped the costume bit sometime around age 12. I’m foggy on my last costume experience as an adult. I do know I enjoyed witnessing my kids go through the Halloween ritual. And we were invited to a costume party for adults once. I went as a sophisticated pirate–hair slicked back, eye patch, a suit. Once a pirate…

061But the point to my Halloween memories is that in the early years, say 5 and 6, I wandered up long walkways under a full moon with a few friends. It was usually a school night and a break from the routine of whatever it was I did after dinner at that age. We were safe back then. People usually made cookies and cupcakes–commercial candy, other than candy corns wrapped in a napkin, was rare. When I went to bed, my parents would rifle through my stash and take some of the goods. It was truly innocent fun–that is how I like to remember Halloween.

I also like remembering 2010 and 2012 when the SF Giants wrapped up the World Series right around Halloween. Well, once again the team with the most facial hair won it all. Congrats to the Sox. But, remember, the Giants are an even-year champion.
