Sammy barks at the mail carrier six days per week without fail and with the same result. I asked Anne why he continues to bark, day after day; why doesn’t he get accustomed to the mailman? She looked at me like I was crazy. “He barks because the mailman always leaves.” Hmm….I didn’t look at that way.
I assumed Sammy, 88 pounds with a deafening bass bark, was irritated by the intrusion of a person in uniform who made noise putting letters in the mailbox drop. His reaction to the mailman is without parallel—neighbors get a heads up woof, little kids running through the flowers, maybe two woofs and contractors who’ve been in the house previously, zippo. I didn’t realize our dog and the mailman have a game going on. He barks, the carrier leaves.
What else am I seeing half-way, upside down, or not at all? Excuse me, the mail just came!
