Check out those claws on this city side egret.

Egrets that hang out in cities of one million or more have an edge to their personality. For one, they are less likely to fly away, say over the ocean, because there are freeways instead of the deep blue sea. In a word they confront confinement on a daily basis. But, on the good side, there is less competition in downtown areas than at the beach where pelicans, sea gulls and the like are carving out their territory. I haven’t seen two egrets together in the same city scape in years.

Took these shots yesterday at a public park in the heart of Sacramento, California’s capital city. I’m glad to see this wild bird adding variety to public ponds filled with mallards and Canadian geese.
