This week I took a photo of the Carmelite Monastery as viewed from the Granite Point Trail at Point Lobos. I’ve walked this area for decades and often wondered what the monastery is like–reviews of it praise the gardens maintained by the Carmelite nuns. With this post I have made it a priority to visit this place of contemplation.
The monastery, established in 1931, is one of the oldest on the West Coast and overlooks the infamous Monastery Beach, aka, Mortuary Beach by the locals. The undertow is extremely dangerous–a man drowned here last week after he tried to save his son who had been swept away–the boy survived. I will stick to the trail.
