I voluntarily pick up trash on one of the world’s great beaches: Carmel-by-the-Sea. First, the beach needs it. Secondly, I don’t have a paying job anymore so I have some free time to pick up beer cans, abandoned sand toys and dog poop–there are a handful of other volunteers who do the same thing, Thirdly, and most importantly, why do people litter? I think about the answers to this question every day, especially when I’m out there with my bucket and claw. There’s no excuse to litter. I’m hopeful that when people see this white-haired, old guy bending over to collect trash, they may feel a little guilty and not litter. Or, maybe they mistakenly think some government program is paying me. Peace.
