In Sacramento ginkgo trees are the last to lose their leaves. Yesterday the ginkgoes were in full grandeur, a spectacular yellow. So, I decided to park my 1984 Vanagon under a ginkgo to see how its faded yellow paintp compared to Mother Nature’s work. Of course, there was no comparison.

This is such a lovely, understated moment. I really enjoyed the quiet curiosity behind the idea of lining up your Vanagon with the ginkgo, as if you were inviting time and nature into the same frame. That small act of noticing says a lot.

The contrast you draw, between human-made paint slowly fading and the tree arriving at its peak right on schedule, feels gentle and wise without spelling anything out. And that last line, “Of course, there was no comparison,” lands perfectly. It lets the image do all the talking.

It’s a reminder of how beauty shows up when we slow down enough to look, and how nature never needs to try very hard to outdo us 🍂
