Egrets at the Carmel Lagoon had competition this week from a double-created cormorant. Note, the water droplets on this goose-like bird’s neck–it had swum about 20 feet underwater in its search fish.

Double-Crested Cormorant
The double-crested cormorant lacks sufficient preen oil to shed water, so it often stands in the sun to dry off. Yet, this condition makes the bird an excellent hunter when diving underwater.
