The Nasturtium Forest
The western hillside of Mission Trail which ends at the historic Carmel Mission is home to a forest of nasturtiums. Here are a few examples.
I’ve been harvesting nasturtium seeds for over ten years, most ending up with orange blooms. But this batch planted last Fall in the side yard produced tiger lily like colors. This season I will make sure to keep these seed pods separate from the orange group.
The Wandering Nasturtium
I plant nasturtium seeds throughout the year in our “yard”. This easy to grow vine/flower enjoys wandering from its initial starting point.
Ivy geraniums and nasturtiums combine for this color mix in our yard. Once established these plants need little water.
We’re finally getting nasturtiums to spread again after three years of gopher attacks. I haven’t seen the battlefield lately with mounds of dirt and dead vines. Too soon to declare victory.
