They’re called red dragonflies but frankly they are orange as shown in this photo taken at a Sacramento lily pond.
Water lilies are blooming at Sacramento’s William Land Park which means red dragonflies are about. Took this shot yesterday with my camera on a tripod–getting too old to hand-hold a 300mm lens–but at least I didn’t fall in the pond.
This close-up of a red dragonfly reminds me of those cheaply done science fiction horror movies from yesteryear? There appears to be an aviator’s helmet on its head, something needed by aliens from another planet. Autumn brings an end to the water lily blooming season at Sacramento’s William Land Park. But the large leaves remain, many with various insects that attract scores of red dragonflies. Here is a shot I took yesterday of one very large dragonfly.
