The path ahead contains some obstacles, but with care it is passable. The magical redwoods still stand. I had expected more damage from the aftermath of a forest fire that had blackened over 312,000 acres of the Big Sur area, but in the end, it continues to be one of California’s great natural jewels.

Soberanes Canyon Trail
It takes 2,000 steps (thanks Fitbit) to go from roadside parking to a spectacular grove of old growth redwood via the Soberanes Canyon Trail. Along the way you’ll pass cacti growing on hillsides and a valley of thick underbrush.
