Your read it here first—‘tis the season to apologize (see the Pontifications Page, November 9, 2013). Last week we had Lara Logan, the Mayor of Toronto and the President leading the way in saying they were sorry. Yesterday, the Mayor topped himself by expressing regret for a public comment about oral sex, although he was more graphic than that–about the sex part that is. Advice to anyone: it is hard to be graphic about “oral sex” in a public setting without offending or raising eyebrows. Clearly, Mayor Rob Ford did not get the memo. He is definitely on a career-ending roll. He essentially is a man who has no vocabulary boundaries.

People play the sorry card as long as it works. Sometimes, it’s the only card they have when they get caught cheating (infidelity, breaking the speed limit, or a vase, etc.). Eventually “sorry” becomes meaningless. Sorry.

But in Ford’s case it is no longer an issue of contrition. He needs help understanding why he is destroying himself in the public arena. I hope he is finished.

Strange isn’t how so many politicians end up saying, “I’m sorry” to the point, as you said, it is meaningless?

Like you, I have noticed a lot of politicians playing the, “sorry” card. Seems that statistics say if you apologize for your “wrong-doings” you cause your followers to have kinder feelings toward you. (Not me!)
