Bulletin: Mayor Rob Ford was the leading political loser in 2013. Now this year from my home state of New Jersey, the world is getting a glance at what is wrong with political leaders. A top aide to Gov. Chris Christie orchestrated a traffic jam to punish a mayor who didn’t endorse Christie. Supposedly, Christie didn’t sanction this and I have to believe him because he’s too savvy to be this dumb, right? The jam held up parents getting their kids to the first day of school and delayed an ambulance involved in a life-saving situation. I’d say the jam was not only idiotic, but criminal.
Political leaders surround themselves with operatives who sometimes go rogue. The people elected Christie, but certainly not those aides who believe politics is a game and this is the part that is on Christie. He picked these aides to be in power positions. Now, he has to own up to it.
I know what top political aides to governors do—I was one. We cover up, deflect criticism, but we don’t initiate foolhardy actions that require deflections. Shame on Jersey. This is not a “fogetta bout it” moment!
