Politics is a ping pong game played by gorillas and the Christie Bridge Scandal (CBS) is game-on. Today in his annual state of the state address, Gov. Christie of New Jersey apologized again for the CBS debacle–this was a defensive lob. What else could he say?  Opponents have hit back by calling for probes, not only over the fake traffic study, but also regarding the alleged misuse of federal hurricane relief funds that, in part, paid for ads featuring Christie and his family.  Whatever! The man is down and the balls are whizzing by him.

Two things to watch:(1) if he survives and handles the onslaught with dignity and controlled temperament, he will get to serve; (2) If he goes on the offensive, he may lose sight of the fact that the CBS hurt people and the damage occurred under his watch, involving people he trusted enough to put on the public payroll. Sometimes the hardest play for politicians is to not score points by going on the offensive.
