The USA-Canada women’s Gold Medal hockey game was one for the ages, led by the agonizing sliding of a puck towards an empty net in the final minutes of play. If the puck goes in, the USA is assured of a win and a gold medal. No one is near the puck save for the invisible defender known as fate. The puck strikes the goal post and bounces away and that stroke of fortune is followed up by a game tying goal for Canada which goes on to win in overtime.

Both teams deserve a standing ovation—they played their hearts out, and that is what Olympians are supposed to do.
