The California coastline is a great place to reflect, although it lacks the dramatic “end of the year” effect that comes with falling leaves. Take the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Harding Township, New Jersey. Even though it’s 3,000 miles from my home, I like going to this refuge to enjoy its “silence” in October where noise might be mallards taking off in flight, or the wind rustling through leaves and bare branches. The swamp features raised boardwalks that meander through the marsh and duck blinds. It’s free. Please click the photos for full effect.
