Birds with Eye Make-Up

I spotted these black oystercatchers with their red rimmed eyes yesterday about a 1,000 feet from Carmel State Beach. What I find amazing is that 30 feet away in the undergrowth I saw rabbits and quail with, of course, pelicans flying overhead. Nice.
