The sights along Soberanes Canyon Trail near the Big Sur coast include butterflies, wildflowers, old growth redwoods, a meandering creek and …a dog? Dogs aren’t allowed on the trail but this one zipped by, about 50 feet behind a runner who made me feel very old by the way he passed me effortlessly. The hike is strenuous and, at times, treacherous. The smart ticket is to cut the hike in half; i.e., avoid the steep incline that starts at the 1.5 mile point. Simply put, the trail in the upper elevation isn’t maintained very well—you may slip, fall, like I did.
