The Red-bellied Woodpecker has red on top of its head, but not so much on its belly where feathers usually cover the coloring. Here is a close-up of the bird at a feeder in my sister’s backyard in Southern Illinois—you can barely see a tinge of red on the belly. Controversy? Many bird people say the name is misleading. I say, “move on”.
Simply put, it appears to me that the naming of birds and butterflies is an inexact science and I am powerless to do anything about it (ha, ha, ha!).
