The historic Carmel Mission has at its entrance, a blue agave in bloom for the next few weeks, and then, that will be it–the plant dies. Blue agaves live some 40 years until they put out a flowering stalk that can grow up to 25 feet like the one in this photo.
The plant which only blooms once in its lifetime puts all its energy into the stalk, then dies.
