Mourning doves are described in bird books as having a dark beak. But the mourning dove I photographed yesterday on a garage roof had a very bright blue beak. Its mate had the typical black beak. I’ve seen photos of doves with a smattering of blue on the beak but never as bright as the one on the roof yesterday.
This dove looked puffy. Pregnant? Clearly the two doves were collecting nesting material. The odds are in favor of pregnancy as the mourning dove is a prolific breeder with an average of 5 to 6 broods per year in warm climates.
