Went to the Pacific Grove Monarch Sanctuary recently, hoping to see thousands of these majestic butterflies. But the unseasonably warm weather has thrown the monarch off track, or at least that was one reason why there were so few hanging high up in the trees. Some years the count has been in the tens of thousands in mid-November, but this year like in our backyard, the number have been small. I saw three monarchs flying at the sanctuary and two in the backyard. However, there was a giant iron butterfly at the entrance. Admission and parking are free at the sanctuary which is staffed by volunteers. Worth a visit even if there no photo-ops. I will be going back soon now that the weather has turned wintery.
