Here are images of a black swallowtail butterfly. The female is larger than the male with a wing span of four inches or so, according to several internet sites. However, I took the shot on the bottom in a forest in Southern Illinois and I swear that this swallowtail was “gigantic,” much more than four inches. In fact, every time I look at this photo, the butterfly gets bigger.
