Ladybugs vs. Asian Lady Beetles

The Asian Lady beetle has a white “M” below its head.

Our front yard appears to be a battle ground between two insect-eating species: the ladybug and the Asian Lady beetle. Love the ladybugs. But the look alike Asian lady beetle will bite and excrete a foul smelling liquid when riled. The Asian Lady beetle–introduced in this country in 1916 to fight aphids– has a white “M’ marking below its head while the lady bug does not.
