The Crested Duck

A crested duck plays in the water at a public pond in Sacramento.

Until yesterday I’d never seen a crested duck, distinguished by a tuft on its head. Had to read up on this species that apparently has been around for more than 400 years. The tuft is a genetic deformity in the duck’s skull. Sometimes the crested is bred to be a pet but the deformity requires the duck to be mixed with a non-crested species for the offspring to survive and not all will have tufts.

  1. Reminds me of a poodle with a show cut!
    Quite unusual.

  2. At first glance at a distance, I thought the duck might have a brain tumor. Most unusual.
