A Monarch At Last!

A monarch butterfly buries itself in a cosmos.
The monarch was twice the size of any butterfly that I’ve seen in our backyard this year. It liked the lantana as well as the cosmos.

A monarch visited our tiny backyard butterfly garden yesterday morning. I took some shots through a window. When I went outside for a closer look, it flew away and wasn’t seen again.

October 19, 2017 was the last time I saw a monarch in the backyard–that one was in the ivy. In 2010 and 2011, there were monarchs flying all over the neighborhood.

Two years ago we set our yard up as a way station for monarchs on their annual migration to Mexico. We’ve attracted various other butterfly species as well as rabbits and quail. I hope to see more monarchs in the coming week.
