A year ago today I took what would be my last photograph of a monarch butterfly in my backyard. For 12 consecutive years I could count on seeing a monarch in October flittering around cosmos, lantana, or English ivy. But this year no monarchs showed up, including in other nearby areas where I typically saw them in October. This isn’t a scientific observation, just my take on losing wildlife in an urban setting during a year of drought and wildfires.
