Today’s internet sensation concerns a Northern California couple who found five buried cans of old gold coins worth an estimated $10 million— maybe $20 million if you are an IRS agent. I counter that eureka with my tale of luck and pluck. As a kid, maybe 12 or so, I found a 1797 Large Cent in the woods behind our house—the same area where I once found an arrowhead, not doubt, left by the Rockaway Indians (not a ball team). The coin today is worth about $300, of course, I unloaded it decades ago along with some other treasures to buy a beat up Chevy.
As I look back I wish I had kept the coin, not to sell today, but to remind me of the history of where I once lived and the thrill that day of finding something old.
