Yesterday there was a quail, California’s state bird, on my neighbor’s fence post. Over the years I’ve observed several unbird-like habits of the quail. First, it favors walking and running over flying. Secondly, when I approach a quail, I’ve noticed it will turn its back on me as if that move will make me disappear. There is a quail family living in the bushes across the street–I’m glad they’re around.
