I was wrong all these years. I refer to the Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly that I always took to be a giant Monarch. This photo was taken yesterday on our street by Anne with my cell phone—I was holding the dogs. We did an internet search to verify what we were looking at. This was the largest butterfly I’ve ever seen in my life.

They’re big and slow, so I can focus easily. However, there are these smaller white with blue butterflies that jet around–those are tough to capture with a camera. I’ll visit your blog. Thanks.

Yes the tiger swallowtail! There were so many here when I was young. But I hardly see them anymore! What has happened to all the butterflies?

I’ve read that extreme weather and the increased use of pesticides to control milkweed(this is what many butterflies live on) are reasons for the decline.
