Record tying heat yesterday of 96-degrees in Monterey, California altered lifestyles including that of our honey bees. I’d never seen this before–for most of the day scores of bees flew to nearby bird baths and loaded up on water which they brought back to the hive.  The water is spread around the hive where other bees fan the air causing the water to evaporate and cool the hive. I am not a “science guy” but I find the instinctive behavior of bees to be amazing. They have a short life span of two weeks to one month, and in this brief time they are constantly doing something to survive as a group.

Ocean breezes are supposed to cool the area off today, so the water brigade may have the day off.

Thank you. The bucket brigade continued the next day but finally today we have fog, so the water bees took the afternoon off.
