Name this butterfly because I can’t. I’m thrown by the yellow markings on the end of its wings. I took this shot yesterday in Carmel, California. I thought it was a version of a painted lady, but I am not positive.
I’ve been in places filled with various butterflies almost running into each other. But I enjoy the challenge of photographing these colorful insects when there aren’t many flitting about. If you don’t get the shot, you might be done for the day. Essentially, It is a battle between using auto focus and manual as AF in sports mode doesn’t always click when the object is moving fast while using the manual mode requires knowing where the object will be next–the butterfly is often unpredictable.
This was the only butterfly I saw yesterday.
Red Admiral; they are common in our north central Illinois area. 🙂

Tom, Thanks. Anne also told me it was a Red Admiral. Regardless, I didn’t know the species.
