Water is not to be wasted in Monterey County. It is costly and scarce. Here’s a shot of our rain barrel after a downpour two days ago. It is full, filled by the runoff from the roof of our house. Drought tolerant plants are abundant in this area just as grass lawns are a rare sight. Some people have signs in their front yards that declare they use captured rain water—the stigma of wasting water runs deep.

Wow! Water is so plentiful here in Illinois that we heat and air-condition our house with well water used for the Geothermal system, and then the water is poured into the Iroquois River.

We simply don’t get enough rain in most parts of California. Also, Big Ag is a major water consumer as is the constant demand to develop more housing. My sister lives in Southern Illinois, so I know about the abundance of water there.
